New Year CleaningThe dusting was anciently known as New Year cleaning. It is said to have originated from a religious rite supposed to eliminate epidemic diseases in the times of Yao and Shun, two legendary sage kings in ancient China. Following this custom, all households clean their courtyards, articles of furniture and bedclothes from the 24th to the end of the 12th lunar month to usher in the New Year.
